New Youth Logo & Mission Statement
For the past four years, we at the HPC Youth Ministry have been equipping students to "walk in the light and glow in the dark." This has been a helpful mission statement for me and other youth leaders at HPC because it has reminded us of our main focus in Youth Ministry: to be instruments through which the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shines. I hope it has also been helpful to remind students of their need to walk with Jesus Christ so that they might shine as lights to those around them.
As memorable and helpful as "Walk in the Light, Glow in the Dark" has been, I believe it is time to change our mission statement's language once again. Change is the norm in Youth Ministry. Youth Culture changes by the day, and youth group dynamics change every year. While this does not change our primary focus at all, it does prompt us to examine how we communicate that primary focus and whether or not our methods of communication resonate with current and future students, parents and volunteers.
With all of that in mind, and with the monumental change of moving our church to an entirely new location, I'd like to take this time to introduce to you our Youth Ministry's new mission statement and logo:
The HPC Youth Ministry equips students to trust Jesus as their cornerstone, make God's Word their foundation and invest their lives in God's Kingdom mission.
In August, we will address the biblical principles behind this mission statement in greater detail with our students. We will also discuss with them how we hope this focus will apply to their lives. But for now, here are a few explanations as to the change in our language.
- The mission statement has a "building" theme to it. Our new high school youth room is called "The Cornerstone" because it is at the front corner of our new church building. This Cornerstone theme is also reflected in the logo along with a "Y" within the cornerstone itself, which of course stands for "Youth." But more importantly, this reflects our desire to trust Christ as the only Cornerstone for our lives, as we are told in Isaiah 28:16: “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation." Jesus is that cornerstone (Acts 4:11), and in 1 Peter 2:6-7 we are told that "we ourselves are being built up as a spiritual house" upon Christ, our Cornerstone.
- This mission statement also recalls the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:24, which says: “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock." It is our hope that in this ever changing world, our youth would depend on the only unshakeable foundation of Jesus Christ and His Word.
- It is also our hope that in building their foundations on God's Word students clearly see that they are the church, "members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord." (Ephesians 2:19b-21)
- Finally, we want our students to actively invest their lives in something greater than themselves: the Kingdom of God! What could be a more valuable treasure than one that is eternal? (Matthew 13:44)
The primary focus of our Ministry has not changed, just the way we communicate that focus to everyone. I look forward to seeing more and more students from HPC and the Hixson community Trust Jesus as their Cornerstone, make God's Word their Foundation, and Invest their lives in God's Kingdom mission.
