HPC Resources: Worship
This past Sunday, we started a theme in our worship service of exploring the "Songs of Ascents" or "Gradual Psalms" or "Pilgrimage Songs" from Psalms 120-134. Each week, we will use one or two of these Psalms in our corporate worship - as calls to worship, as responsive readings, as texts for meditation.
I would encourage you to take some time during your devotionals each week to reflect on the Psalms we used the previous week in worship. To aid in that, I have included several resources below that you may find helpful.
The Treasury of David - Charles Spurgeon
Spurgeon's seven volume "magnum opus" is packed full of helpful commentary. You can find the entire commentary here and click through the Psalms to read his writing. A helpful tool, not just for this worship series, but for all of your Psalm reading.
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship In An instant Society - Eugene Peterson
This is one of my favorite Peterson books. The title alone is so descriptive of the journey of lifetime discipleship as a Christian. Each chapter focuses in on one of the Psalms of Ascents. An invaluable resource.
The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms - Timothy Keller (with Kathy Keller)
This devotional-style commentary walks through every verse of the Psalms in one year. It's a great devotional resource, not just for the Songs of Ascents, but for all of the Psalms. Keller writes in his usual intelligent but conversational style, making it an easy read that edifies and encourages.
I hope that these resources are helpful, and I pray that God will sanctify us as we walk through these Psalms corporately in worship.
In Christ,
Patrick
